It started raining here last night and it’s still coming down periodically this morning. Mom said our rain gauge had an inch in it. Very gloomy-looking outside.

Marianne had a great quote on her blog this morning.

Don’t write what you know—what you know may bore you, and thus bore your readers. Write about what interests you—and interests you deeply—and your readers will catch fire at your words.” —Valerie Sherwood

I didn’t accomplish much on the shapeshifter story last night. Not for lack of trying, however. I spent way too much time googling stuff on social class, clans, tribes, etc. in an attempt to figure out how my shapeshifter subculture works. I’m still baffled. *sigh* So I guess I’ll be doing more of the same today.

Today’s horoscopes:

“Inspiration in various contexts could be filling your mind today. (Cool! I could use some inspiration today.) Opportunities for advancement of your artistic or spiritual interests could come your way, perhaps through advice given by a new acquaintance. (Hey, that sounds good, too!) You could also be in the right place at the right time to get a lucky break! (Wow! This sounds like a banner day, all around. :) ) You’re also likely to be feeling especially romantic and sexy and you might want to celebrate your good fortune by getting together with your romantic partner. Enjoy! (Well, so much for THAT part of the ‘scope. )

“If you follow your gut feeling, a big payoff could await you. There are some rewards to be earned and others to be luckily chanced upon. (Show me the money! ;) ) Getting out into the world and impressing your ideas on others could yield both types of these riches today. (So, does that mean you guys?)

“Your boss isn’t questioning you because they doubt your ability—on the contrary, they’re amazed at what you’ve been able to accomplish! (Given that I’M my boss, you’d think I’d know whether my ability is good or not, wouldn’t you? Then why do I frequently feel like a complete fraud as a writer? I’m ready for the amazement now, please.) Give them some insight—but not the whole enchilada. A little mystery helps. (LOL! How am I supposed to be mysterious to MYSELF???)

  1. Sometimes you just have to battle through the hard parts.

I like the quote about interest. I used it before I knew it. My protagonists had to go shopping and I’d started writing the scene, was actually most of the way through it when I realized writing about shopping bores me as much as going shopping. So I ripped the scene out and put the few pertinent points in the next scene. I was much happier with the result.

  2. Mandy, yeah, I’m pretty sure I have stuff in my stories that needs to be ripped out. It’s so boring!
