On this date in 1940 Gone With the Wind won eight Academy Awards, including Best Picture. But the most ground-breaking award was Hattie McDaniel’s win for Best Supporting Actress for her portrayal of Mammy. Miss McDaniel was the first African-American actor to win an Oscar.

And she so completely deserved it! It’s so funny, as time goes on her portrayal of Mammy reminds me more and more of my maternal grandmother.

well, I adore Gone with the Wind. The parties, the clothes. the fire scene. Sigh. It’s like comfort food for my eyes.
