We’re off to the lovely town of Clifden today. It serves as the “capital” of Connemara, Ireland. Local events include the Connemara Pony Show and the Omey Island Races. We can also visit the Connemara National Park, Kylemore Abbey (which might be worth a blog post on its own), Ballynahinch Castle (which is now a hotel), and the Slyne Head Lighthouse.
Today in history:
- 1901 – TV host Ed Sullivan was born.
- 1928 – Sir Alexander Fleming discovered a bacteria-killing mold growing in his laboratory which led to the creation of penicillin.
- 1951 – CBS made the first color televisions available for sale to the general public, but the product was discontinued less than a month later. Um… why was a TV network making TVs in the first place?
On TV tonight: new episodes of Ghost Hunters, Mythbusters and Ancient Aliens.
Reading: I’m still reading that same Georgette Heyer book. Should finish that up tonight.
The tour bus is broken down today.
Seriously, I’ve got to make this blog post a quick one because I’ve been having computer problems and I got a new 1TB hard drive which will hopefully help me sort everything out.
Anyway, just reminder that we have new episodes of NCIS, NCIS: LA, Unforgettable, and Top Shot tonight.
And now we’re off to Saas-Fee, Switzerland. It’s the main village in the Saas Valley. It’s surrounded by 13 mountain peaks, each over 13,000 feet high. Its proximity to two glaciers provides winter sports year ’round. No cars are allowed in the village, they all have to be parked in lots outside the village. The only gas-powered vehicles allowed in town are the garbage trucks.
In addition to winter sports, there’s also hiking, hang gliding, and classical music. The pictures of the village and surrounding area are stunning!
Today in history:
- 1926 – Singer/actress Julie London was born. I remember her best from my parents’ Big Band records and in the role of nurse Dixie McCall on the TV show Emergency.
- 1934 – Steamship RMS Queen Mary was launched. She is now permanently docked in Long Beach, California and open as a hotel and museum. The ship is also reported to be very haunted.
- 1960 – The first televised debate took place between presidential candidates Richard M. Nixon and John F. Kennedy.
On TV tonight is the two-hour series premiere of Fox’s new show Terra Nova which I’m hoping lives up to the hype. Also tonight, new episodes of Castle and Hawaii 5-O. No Warehouse 13 tonight, alas.
Reading: I’m reading another fun Georgette Heyer mystery, Envious Casca.
