On this date in 1914, legendary silent movie director D. W. Griffith began filming his very controversial movie Birth of a Nation (a 3 hour and 11 minute epic). He introduced many new movie-making techniques that influenced other directors.

It’s also the birthday of movie mogul Louis B. Mayer, co-founder of MGM. If he were still alive he’d be 123. :D
