1879 – Humorist Will Rogers was born. He claimed he never met a man he didn’t like. I’m betting he might change his tune if he met some of our current batch of politicians. *g*
1922 – In Egypt, British archaeologist Howard Carter and his men found the entrance to Tutankhamun‘s tomb in the Valley of the Kings.
1924 – Nellie Tayloe Ross of Wyoming was elected the first female governor in the United States.
1952 – The United States government established the National Security Agency (also known as No Such Agency because for years the government claimed they didn’t exist).
Fixed some more things on the book last night after doing some online research. Thank heavens for historical photo collections that have pictures of everything under the sun!
What the heck was up with Samantha Harris‘ hair last night on DWTS?! Did she stick her finger in a light socket? Anyway. On to who got the boot. Not too surprisingly it was Kathy Ireland. Though I was really hoping Debi Mazar would be an early surprise elimination.
Okay, since my Tuesdays are taken up with the DWTS reports, I’ll keep doing the Tacky Tuesday segments on Wacky Wednesdays. Today we’ll be visiting the city of Portland, Oregon. Our first stop is the 24 Hour Church of Elvis. Then we’ll go look at the World’s Smallest Park. We’ll finish up our tour at the suckiest attraction in Portland, Stark’s Vacuum Museum.
On this date in 1955, screen legend James Dean died after crashing his car. He was only 24.
I actually did a small amount of writing last night. Shocking! Of course, when I say “small” I mean about two sentences. LOL!
Reading: Finished up Ghost of a Chance which I thought was very cute. Next up is Bound to Love Her by Esri Rose. She’s another new-to-me author. It’s about a woman in Colorado who finds an injured elf and saves his life. He’s not the Keebler or Santa’s helpers variety of elf either, by the way. He’s closer to the Tolkien variety.
Yes, boys and girls, it’s that time of the year again! The return of my seasonal Dancing with the Stars reports!!! Of course, they have such a huge group this time around (18 competitors), last night was just the men. The women get to strut their stuff tonight. The men each danced one full dance, then their second dances were done in a relay format.
Aaron Carter & Karina Smirnoff (Cha cha cha & Viennese waltz relay) – The cha cha wasn’t bad considering it was the first time out of the chute (to mix my metaphors). Hated Karina’s outfit, though. The judges liked it pretty well, the dance that is. LOL! They didn’t comment on Karina’s outfit. They scored 22/30. The judges ranked them first in the relay for an additional 10 points.
Mark Dacascos & Lacey Schwimmer (Cha cha cha & Viennese waltz relay) – I thought he did a great job with the cha cha cha. The judges were pickier than I, however. Shocker, I know. LOL! They scored 21/30. I thought he was the best in the relay. But the judges ranked them 2nd (for 8 points).
Tom DeLay & Cheryl Burke (Cha cha cha & Viennese waltz relay) – Whoever thought of his dancing the cha cha cha to Wild Thing is crazy or brilliant, I’m not sure which! But it worked. He’s not good but it was way better than I expected. *g* They scored 16/30. He did a much better job with the Viennese waltz. However, they were ranked 4th and got 4 points.
Ashley Hamilton & Edyta Sliwinska (Foxtrot & Salsa relay) – I thought their foxtrot was great! He does need more polish. But, hey, FIRST NIGHT. Of course, I was also, as always, distracted by Edyta’s dress. I always worry she’s going to have a massive wardrobe malfunction. They scored 15/30 (which I totally don’t agree with!). They were ranked 4th in the salsa relay and got 4 points.
Michael Irvin & Anna Demidova (Cha cha cha & Viennese waltz relay) – In practice he kept asking himself what he thought he was doing and why did he ever agree to do this. LOL! Bless his heart, he needs work, though the audience liked it. I tended to agree more with the judges this time around. They scored 13/30. They were ranked 3rd in the relay and got 6 points.
Chuck Liddell & Anna Trebunskaya (Foxtrot & Salsa relay) – He’s a mixed martial arts champ and he is so out of his element. He’s got his work cut out for him as far as the foxtrot goes, bless his heart. But, hey, it’s the first night. He can improve. Len “Crankypants” Goodman said it was better than he thought it was going to be. LOL! They scored 16/30. They were ranked 3rd in the salsa relay and got 6 points.
Donny Osmond & Kym Johnson (Foxtrot & Salsa relay) – Yes! Now that was a foxtrot! Okay, the judges had a good point that the technique wasn’t as good as it could have been. But theatrically speaking, he rocked it! They scored 20/30. In the salsa, I have to agree with Carrie Ann. Donny smoked the others in the salsa relay. They came in first and earned 10 points.
Louie Vito & Chelsie Hightower (Foxtrot & Salsa relay) – Wow. He’s never danced and he’s never even watched the show! He’s so cute and I want to put him my pocket (he’s only 5’5″). But at least I didn’t think he looked like “a little dancing hobbit” like Bruno! *g* He needs some work but he did a pretty good job, overall with the foxtrot. They scored 19/30. They were ranked 2nd in the salsa relay and got 8 points.
I’m a tad irritated with ABC, however, because I can no longer vote on their website. Something screwy won’t let me. Tonight I’ll try it with Firefox. Right now I’m kind of rooting for the mixed martial artist champion. He just seems such an unlikely winner at this.
Let’s see, it’s Tacky Tuesday, isn’t it? Where can we go today? Okay, let’s head to Spokane, Washington and Marvin Carr’s One of a Kind in the World Museum. Next week we’ll have a more robust tour.
Today was a busy day in Hollywood history. It’s the birthday of several people. Filmmaker Erich Von Stroheim (born 1885), actor Paul Muni (born 1895), producer/actor John Houseman (born 1902), B-movie cowboy star Allan “Rocky” Lane (born 1904—he was later the voice of Mister Ed).
Last night’s Castle totally rocked! Tonight is another busy night. We have the second night of DWTS plus Ruby and the Rockits and the season finale of Warehouse 13. Then it’s the season & series premieres: NCIS & its new spin-off NCIS: Los Angeles and the new show The Forgotten with Christian Slater. And after prime time is a new episode of Surviving Disaster (this time around it’s about surviving a home invasion). Don’t know what’s up with the sucky time slot unless they didn’t want to compete with the network shows.
Did a bit of work on the steampunk idea last night. After all the DVR drama and working on the DWTS report, it occurs to me maybe I shouldn’t try to write much on Mondays.
Reading: I picked Twanged back up last night. But I’m heading for the library today so I’ll have new books. Yay!
