I’ve always wanted to visit Peru and fly over the Nazca Lines. Ever since I first heard of this place years ago I’ve been fascinated with it. In the Nazca Desert a series of mysterious figures (human and animal) are depicted across 193 square miles. You can really only see them from the air, but the designs were created thousands of years ago. How, you ask? Nobody knows! Hence the mystery.

Today in history:

1893 – Thomas Edison finished construction on the first motion picture studio in West Orange, New Jersey.

1894 – Director/producer John Ford was born. He began directing in 1917 and ended his career in 1966.

1906 – Singer/actress Hildegarde was born. Yes, she used just the one name for over 70 years. Long before Cher or Madonna. And she had a lot more class.

On TV tonight: just Ghost Hunters so I’ll probably watch some recorded stuff too. I have become obsessed with the old ’70s TV show Emergency! which I’ve been watching on Netflix. But I need to watch the series finale of Chuck and a few other things.

Reading: Last night I read The Name on the Bracelet by Margaret Sutton which is the 13th book in the Judy Bolton series.

We’re off to St Petersburg, Russia today to visit Pavlovsk Palace. The palace looks much the same as it did when Catherine the Great gave it to her son. Hitler tried to burn it in 1944 but most of the furniture was hidden from the Nazis and now resides in the rebuilt palace. The park surrounding the palace is designed as an English-style formal garden. All in all, it’s all stunning.

Today in history:

1959 – MS Hans Hedtoft, called at the time the safest ship afloat and “unsinkable” like the RMS Titanic, struck an iceberg on her maiden voyage and sank, killing all 95 aboard. Did they not learn anything from the Titanic? Don’t brag!!!

On TV tonight: a new episode of Alcatraz. Have I mentioned how much I love this show?????

Reading: Over the weekend, I began reading Napoleon’s Pyramids by William Dietrich. It’s a historical thriller about an American who joins Napoleon’s expedition to Egypt.

Palmyra, Syria

Baalbek, Lebanon

Caesarea, Israel

Jerash, Jordan

Bosra, Syria

We’ve had two celebrity deaths the past few days. James Farentino died at age 73 on the 24th. And yesterday Robert Hegyes died at age 60. Farentino was in many shows over the years but Hegyes is best remembered for his role as Juan Epstein on Welcome Back, Kotter.

On TV tonight: tonight is the series finale of Chuck which makes me rather sad even though they’ve really taken the show as far as it could go. We also have a new episode of Fringe.

Reading: Now I’m reading Viridis by Calista Taylor. This is a steampunk romance. It’s good, so far.

I’m in the mood to hang out on the beach somewhere. So we’re going to visit the Caribbean islands in the Grenadines. They comprise over 600 islands! Powdery sand beaches, coral reefs, Visit this site for pictures.

Today in history:

1892 – Pioneer aviatrix Bessie Coleman was born. Read about her, she was made of awesome!

1892 – Actress Zara Cully was born. She’s best known for her role as Mother Jefferson on The Jeffersons,

1905 – Character actor Charles Lane was born. I’d be very surprised if you hadn’t seen him in something. He died in 2007 at age 102!

1905 – Singer Maria Von Trapp was born. Yes, the woman from The Sound of Music. The real woman.

1907 – The Short Magazine Lee-Enfield Mk III was introduced into British Military Service. It remains the second oldest military rifle still in official use.

1911 – Glenn H. Curtiss flew the first successful American seaplane.

1920 – Former Ford Motor Company executive Henry Leland started the Lincoln Motor Company which he later sold to his former employer.

On TV tonight: The Finder and Person of Interest, but I’ve lost interest in the latter. And I have a DVD I need to watch.

Reading: I’m reading a great new book called From the Ashes by Jeremy Burns. It’s an action/adventure/thriller and I’m really enjoying it. And unlike so many books these days there’s almost no cussing. I’m 300 pages into it and there have been a grand total of 3 cuss words that I recall.

Sorry for being offline again. It’s been chaotic here.

But today we’re headed to London to visit The Tate which is home to the United Kingdom’s national art. You can visit Tate Online to view some of the artwork found there.

There’s nothing on TV tonight except the State of the Union address. I have no desire to watch that. Especially when I have Netflix DVDs I need to watch before my account switches to streaming at the end of the week. So I’ll either be watching Agatha Christie’s Tommy & Tuppence or Murdoch Mysteries.

Reading: Been reading a steampunk novel called The Bookman by Lavie Tidhar which was good. And I’m about to start From the Ashes by Jeremy Burns.

If you’d tried to access Google or Wikipedia today you’ll have seen they’re blacked out in protest of the asinine bills in Congress & the Senate, SOPA and PIPA. These bills were pushed by Hollywood in an effort to stop online piracy. Now I know that is a problem. I’ve had many friends who’ve had their books pirated and put online. But these bills would give the government the ability to shut down sites WITH NO PROOF. I don’t want people I like and trust having this ability let alone officials I don’t trust as far as I could throw an elephant. So I’m joining many others in opposing these bills.

A history of crooked politics aside, Chicago, Illinois is a hotbed of museums and awesome food. It’s the 3rd largest city in the United States. Chicago is probably most famous for the Great Chicago Fire in 1871 which was started by Mrs. O’Leary’s cow kicking over a lantern. Or was it? Despite what we’ve been told all these years, the newspaperman who initially reported that “fact” admitted in later years that he made it up to make the story more colorful. Like a fire destroying most of the city wasn’t colorful enough! If you’re hungry you can have some of Chicago’s famous pizza or hot dogs or go for something more upscale. Be sure to visit Navy Pier which sticks out into Lake Michigan. There’s a huge Ferris wheel, plus museums, ships, and restaurants. Be sure to check out all the pictures!
